Substitute Teachers’ Handbook

In order to help substitute teachers perform their job duties, Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center administrators created a substitute teachers’ handbook.

Overview

The handbook provides substitute teachers with information about school policies and procedures and their role and responsibility. It is updated annually.

Origin / Implementation

Administrators decided that a comprehensive handbook could help substitute teachers perform their job effectively and fulfill their responsibilities; much like the existing teacher handbook assists classroom teachers by providing them with access to key resources and school information. The administrators view the availability of the handbook as a way to create an inclusive environment for substitute teachers and to demonstrate to them that they are valued by the school community. The first handbook was issued in 2012.

Results / Impact

The administration reports that substitute teachers perceive they are valued and contributing members of the school and part of the professional community of educators.
