Teachers use their lunch break to learn new technology.

Overview

Once a week, the technology coordinator invites teachers to participate in “lunch ‘n’ learn, ” an opportunity to expand their understanding of education-related technology. Some sessions showcase particular software such as Rubistar, Quizlet, or Google Docs. Other sessions offer teachers an “open lab” forum during which they may present their questions and concerns. Well into its second year, teachers are now offering to facilitate sessions, teaching colleagues about technology resources that are working well for them and their students. During these thirty-minute sessions, teachers may bring their lunch or buy a box lunch prepared by the culinary class designated specifically for those attending “lunch ‘n’ learn.”

Origin / Implementation

The program started in fall 2015 in an effort to make teachers more comfortable with technology and to provide skills that improve instruction and other aspects of being a teacher.

Results / Impact

Besides improving teachers’ computer skills and knowledge, the program created teacher-leaders who are able to share their technology learning all without adding to the school day or requiring outside professional development courses.
