A.W. Beattie Career Center offers summer career camps for rising 6th through 9th grade students.
Description
A.W. Beattie Career Center offers 13 summer career camps to rising 6th through 9th graders. Camps address a wide range of interests and run for four days with both half-day and full-day sessions available. Full-day sessions cost $125 per student and half-day sessions cost $75 per student. CTC teachers lead the camps. The attached flyer provides additional information about the various camps and the topics they cover.
The summer camps create an opportunity to increase the visibility of the CTC and to change the negative perception of CTE that parents and students may hold. Campers participate in hands-on, engaging and relevant career awareness activities that showcase the high-tech, high-demand and high-prestige careers for which CTE students are prepared.
For CTCs interested in offering summer career camps, Sandy Niggel, Assistant Director for Curriculum and Instruction recommends they:
- Make registration simple and accessible. Promote the camps through the sending school districts and other community resources. Post a registration link on the CTC website.
- Offer both half-day and full-day sessions to help address transportation issues for parents. Transportation is the greatest challenge for camp enrollment.
Approximately 160 students enrolled in a camp. Due to the increasing enrollment and demand for the camps, A.W. Beattie expects to continue offering them.
Impact
Camp enrollment continues to grow each year. A.W. Beattie faculty believe the camps are helping to change the perception of CTE and the value CTE offers to students.
