Steamfitters Union Local 449 organized an opportunity for students and their parents to learn more about jobs and training options.

Description

Current and former students and their parents were invited to attend a HVAC-R Expo provided by and held at Steamfitters Local 449 Technology Center where they learned about job benefits, working conditions and the union apprenticeship program. HVAC-R jobs such as service technician, electrician, plumber, refrigerator mechanics and air-conditional technician lead to family-sustaining wages. Over 35 contracts were represented at the Expo and students were encouraged to bring a resume.

To promote the free event, the Union provided a flyer and CTC teachers strongly encouraged students to attend. The Expo was held on a Saturday in April from nine o’clock a.m. until two o’clock p.m. and was funded by the Union; lunch and hourly raffles were provided.

Impact

The HVAC-R Expo strengthens the relationship between the CTC and potential employers for its graduates. The Union plans to continue offering the Expo provided that it generates interested and qualified applicants. This opportunity aligns with the Pennsylvania’s Career Education and Work Standards.
